Day 5 – Size and Significance

Day 5 – Size and Significance

Today is day five of our pilgrimage in Israel. In the short time we have been here we are struck by its tiny size and global significance. We began our journey today in Qatzrin, an ancient city in northern Galilee. Here 50 plus of us gathered together in a tiny ancient house where Chris took us back to the first century in Mark 2:1-15 and how Jesus healed the paralytic man. Through Chris’ account we witnessed the imagery of how friends of the paralytic man used extraordinary means (busting a hole through the roof to lower the man into the crowded house) so he could be healed by Jesus. We were reminded of the importance of living in community and caring for one another.

From this ancient city we were transported further north to the Golan Heights, a beautiful plateau where we viewed 21st century Israeli community working together farming land, raising cattle and tending beautiful vineyards. Here from an abandoned Israeli bunker left from the 1973 Middle East conflict we looked over into Syria. Here we learned more about the struggle of Israel with the nations that surround it and how difficult it is to maintain peace in this land.

From here we journeyed back into first century Caesarea Philippi, a place of pagan worship, where Jesus brings His disciples. It is here that Peter confesses Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and Jesus responds that it is upon that confession of faith that He will build his church. The church is now here in a place that was thought by the people to be the gate to Hades.

From here we followed the Banias stream one of seven which flow from Mount Herman into the Jordan River. It is here that we ended our day with many from our midst being baptized in the Jordan River, the same river where it all began 2000 years ago with the baptism of Jesus. This was a glorious end to the day.

Psalm 128: 5-6 says “May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem, and may you live to see your children’s children. For many of us the blessing of this Psalm is being fulfilled as we continue our journey to Jerusalem.”
